TY Environmental group shortlisted for Young Environmentalist Awards 2017

On Tuesday 21st March a group of TY students will represent St. Pauls in Oughterard at the regional finals of the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards at NUI. The TY students have taken part in the Environmental Leadership programme run by Brigit’s Garden and the Oughterard Youth Cafe since last October.

The group took part in environmental activities and went on a teambuilding surfing trip as part of the programme, which counts towards the An Gaisce Presidents Award. They then decided to carry out a community-based environmental project to make their own community more environmentally friendly. They chose to visit St. Annin’s primary school for a day of Environmental activities with 3rd class which they planned, prepared and practiced as a group in advance. The 3rd class students were delighted to take part in the activities run by the TY students, many of them past-pupils of St. Annin’s themselves. The students played games which helped them learn about things like sorting waste and saving energy, as well as gaining a greater understanding about how issues are interconnected, and how we all need to work together to overcome environmental challenges.

It was good fun. I think that the younger kids in the school learnt a lot and I hope they will put this new knowledge to good use. I also think our own group learnt a lot about each other and the environment.

The Environmental Leadership group will face a panel of judges at the regional finals of the Young Environmentalist Awards where they will present their project. If they are successful, they will go on to represent their school at the national awards in the Mansion House in Dublin in May.

The pilgrims absolutely loved being at the garden and got a great deal from the workshop. It provided a good foundation for the rest of the trip and was one of the highlights of the pilgrimage. Thank you so much. JC tours

There is no better or more powerful place to step into the pilgrimage energy, to sink into the rhythms and cycles of the Earth as we begin to explore the rhythms and cycles of our own lives. The setting, the gracious and welcoming people, the Roundhouse and the fabulous food are a delightful dance of the senses for all who visit. Judith Nilan, Stonefire Tours
