Artist in Residency Programme at Brigit’s Garden

An inaugural programme, new to the award winning Celtic Gardens, this residency provides an opportunity for a creative practitioner to research and develop their practice while nestled in the 11 acres of wild flower meadows, Celtic gardens, natural woodlands, ponds, grasslands and nature trails. This progamme, in association with Galway County Arts Office, supports both emerging and established practitioners, working across a variety of disciplines, and is selected by committee based on application proposals.

Our Intention

Our intention is to offer practitioners the space and time to think, research and make new work. The two-week residency which runs is from 5th to 18th November, is based on site in the Roundhouse, which is nestled in the centre of the Celtic gardens. The four Gardens take you on a journey through the Celtic cycle of the seasons, each garden representing one of the Celtic festivals of Samhain, Imbolc, Bealtaine and Lughnasa. This seasonal cycle mirrors the cycle of life from conception to old age and death. The Roundhouse overlooks onto each of the four gardens. The space usually acts as a place for art and music, creative workshops, meditation, yoga, education programmes and quiet reflection.

The unique nature of the gardens and surrounding grounds gives the successful practitioner an opportunity to draw inspiration from nature in immersive surroundings.

The two-week residency permits the candidate full access to the garden with the use of the roundhouse and includes lunch. Travel to and from the Gardens will be the responsibility of the successful candidate though our team can help with these arrangements. The garden is open daily from 10-5.30pm.

At the end of the residency, applicants must lead a presentation on their creative project or work in progress which can be in the form of a report, talk series, exhibition, workshop, or another suitable format.

Who Can Apply?

This residency is open to artists in the creative practice of poetry, literature, theatre and scriptwriting, designers and makers, illustration, photography, film, and music.

At this time, we are not able to cater for certain visual art practices due to limitations in our space, however it is our hope to be able to offer this service in the future.  Proposals should include requirements for space and materials, and any additional questions will be addressed with individual applicants.

Applications are invited from creative practitioners wishing to avail of a unique residency programme. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a practicing artist, you must identify yourself and be recognized by your peers as a practicing artist.
  • Must be able to demonstrate recent artistic achievements in the primary creative practice you are applying for.
  • Must be over 18

Please fill in the online form and submit all required documentation by 6th October, 5pm. Incomplete forms or submission of documentation will eliminate you from the selection process

Applications will not be considered after the closing date and the successful applicant will be notified by email within a few weeks. The successful applicant will be announced through Brigit Garden website and social platforms.
