Now hiring for position of Environmental Education Coordinator

Brigit's Garden is an innovative not-for-profit project on an 11-acre site in Co. Galway, where the Celtic gardens and natural habitats enable visitors of all ages to connect with nature. We are a resource for the community and offer a range of services in tourism, education and the environment. We are also committed to showing the way to an environmentally-friendly future by enhancing biodiversity, installing a range of renewable energies, becoming carbon neutral, reducing plastic use and inspiring people to do likewise.

Brigit’s Garden has established an excellent reputation for education in nature, energy and sustainability. We offer programmes for primary schools, secondary schoolsyouth groups and teachers, as well as summer camps for local children and special events for families and adults.

Our education team also works closely with a number of organisations:

  • Worldwise Global Schools - for Transition Year programmes based on the UN Global Goals
  • Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland - to deliver energy workshops in schools
  • Galway Education Centre – for teachers’ CPD courses
  • Science Foundation Ireland
    •  In 2019 we secured funding from SFI to develop ‘Earth Quest’, a new family STEM  trail around the site
    • We are an SFI Discover Centre and work with the DPSM network
  • Down to Earth Galway – for summer camps and other events based on Forest School
  • We also cooperate closely with NUI Galway and many other organisations

 

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional person who can take our education programmes and events in environment and sustainability to the next level. The person appointed will play a key role in further establishing Brigit’s Garden as an innovative, creative centre for sustainability and nature connection, providing hands-on education for a wide range of age groups. They will join our small, dedicated team and work closely with the Director and other staff.

 

The Education Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating and administering our existing environmental education programmes for schools, youth groups, summer camps and teachers’ CPD courses.
  • Leading the education team, currently 6 contract staff that work on a sessional basis. This involves scheduling, training and coordinating, and responsibility for child safety.
  • Building on existing relationships with organisations listed above and developing new cooperative ventures.
  • Developing new programmes and events for adults and young people in relation to biodiversity, renewable energy, climate change and sustainability.
  • Liaising with the marketing and sales staff to ensure that all programmes are properly and creatively marketed.
  • Seeking funding opportunities and writing and reporting on funding applications.
  • Taking responsibility for working within and monitoring the education budget.
  • Working with the Director and other members in the staff team on the development of Brigit’s Garden as a whole, focusing on our ethos and aims.

 

Skills and experience required:

  • At least four years’ experience in environmental education or similar
  • Demonstrable teaching and facilitation skills, especially with young people
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead a small team well and to work cooperatively and constructively with other members of the staff team
  • Ability to inspire and motivate children and adults to engage with nature and sustainability
  • Skills in developing new activities and programmes
  • Knowledge of or a strong interest in ecology, renewable energy and sustainable living
  • Knowledge of primary and/or secondary curricula and programmes such as Green Schools
  • Sufficient scientific background to lead primary and secondary school STEM-related field trips
  • Strong organisational and project-management skills including competence in managing budgets
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

 

The following skills and experience would be an advantage:

  • Train-the trainer, or experience in developing and delivering training programmes
  • Competency in Irish
  • Experience in marketing and publicity
  • Design skills or competency  in Photoshop or similar platforms

 

Employment details

  • The position is currently for 32 hours a week, and there may be some flexibility in hours
  • This is a permanent position with a six month probationary period
  • The person will be employed by the Board of Trustees at Brigit’s Garden and report to the Director
