What is Forest Bathing?

Forest Bathing is based on the Japanese practice of “Shinrin Yoku”. It is a multi-sensorial, nature mindfulness experience that uses grounding exercises to connect with nature leaving you refreshed and relaxed.

Part of the practice involves slowing down and being calm in the forest and noticing nature all around you. This could be the crunching of leaves underfoot, the smell of wet moss on a damp rock, or drops of rain falling on the pond. This has been scientifically proven to have positive effects on the nervous system, boost the immune system, improve sleep and reduce stress.

During this 1.5 hour introductory experience, you will be guided meditatively around the Garden and woodlands. (Full 2.5 hour option available) You will be invited to focus on your senses, become aware of what you see, hear, smell, touch, and taste and slow down to absorb the natural world around you. Each one of us will notice something different, and you will be invited to share some of your experiences within the group…or not! What ever feels good for you!

The Tea Ceremony

Towards the end, we will gather for a Tea Ceremony. Although the Irish are great with tea, the Japanese have created a wonderful ceremony that represents harmony, respect and tranquility. Enjoy the atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reflect on your journey. Foraged leaves, herbs and berries are infused to create a hot, fresh-brewed seasonal drink which we will share together…and who knows, maybe some treats too!

What to bring Forest Bathing?

The ground may be wet early in the morning, and we may find ourselves lying on the forest floor or sitting against a tree.

Please bring;

  • one more layer than you expect to need. When slowing down, our bodies can get cooler.
  • Wear waterproof clothing – waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers and waterproof boots.

In Ireland, showers of rain throughout the day are common so it is best to be prepared.

What not to bring?

Forget about extra bags and baggage that you will have to carry around. It is best to be “hands free” and light. Your guide will have emergency water, first aid, mobile phone etc.
